College and Pro scouts and coaches have long rated players for proficiency in 5 tools of the game: Hitting, Power-Hitting, Fielding, Baserunning, and Throwing. But there has always been another factor, a “6th Tool” in the success of exceptional players.
Definitions vary, and it’s difficult to quantify, but scouts and coaches know it when they see it. Examples of it are when a player seems to know in advance which way the ball will go, and getting a jump on it, or anticipating what pitch is coming next. It’s the mental game and it comes from a player’s in-depth knowledge of the game and of himself, and indeed, mastery of himself. Without it, the other 5 tools are just abilities that don’t reliably predict a player’s success.
It’s what college and pro scouts are looking for and it is a distinguishing focus of Trosky Baseball.
Coach Trosky coined the term “6th Tool Nation” to reflect this approach to baseball (and to life) that is taught in Trosky Baseball camps and the Online Academy. 6th Tool Nation is becoming the best you can be. It’s a lifestyle, an identity, a spirit of excellence, self-mastery. It’s developing athletes from the inside out. It’s a culture where players and coaches work together, encouraging each other, holding each other accountable to the 6th Tool Standard. Being a 6th Tool Player has nothing to do with size, strength, age, skill or physical tools and has everything to do with the mental makeup and the character of a player: the internal, intangibles. Greatness lies within all players and the 6th Tool Nation works to bring it out in everyone!
…most of whom were born and bred in the small farm town of Norway, Iowa. Norway, subtly known as the baseball capital of the world, has bred more professional baseball players per capita than any other US city.
Within the Trosky family there are 4 major league and 4 minor league baseball professionals, the most prominent being Hal Trosky, the greatest rookie in baseball history. In 1934, during Trosky’s rookie season with the Cleveland Indians, he drove 137 RBI’s, hit 35 home runs, and batted .333. In 1936, he was placed on the cover of Wheaties Cereal for leading the American League with 162 RBI’s, 42 home runs, and batting a .343.

Here are some of the most common questions we get asked. If you any other questions, just ask us.
Trosky Baseball is for the entire journey of the player, from the time they are old enough to get serious about baseball. This generally means from 6th Grade through college. While we have made exceptions, the intensity of our camp requires the ability to focus for extended periods of time. If you have younger children, we’d highly recommend our Online Academy where you can guide them at the right pace.
That’s absolutely up to the player and parent. Some people access it for a 5 to 10-minute insight, others will spend hours going back-and-forth between lessons and drills.
Understand, if we taught the same thing as everyone else, there wouldn’t be camps and you would be getting this information from your coach. There are coaches that are just wrong and there are also coaches very good that might have a different perspective. Usually, when we talk to a coach with a different viewpoint, they come around to our approach and why we teach what we do.
As you can imagine, results vary based on the individual and the effort they put into it. We can say that we are constantly getting letters from Members boasting about how much the Trosky Baseball experience has helped boost their game.
